Crowns and bridges

Porcelain crowns, also known as ceramic crowns, are custom-made caps cemented over your tooth to restore cracked, chipped, misshapen, or discolored teeth. They mimic the appearance and texture of natural enamel, providing a strong, lifelike, and seamless restoration.

Dental Crowns are a type of dental restoration that restore a broken, cracked, or cavitated tooth back to its shape and function. Think of it is a "cap" that goes over your tooth that looks and feels like your tooth. Crowns are necessary for teeth that have large cavities, broken teeth, cracked teeth, or replacement of old and broken large silver and white fillings. Dental crowns can be made out of porcelain, gold, or porcelain fused to metal. Dr. Moran's preference is porcelain crowns as it is an excellent and strong material that can still create excellent esthetic outcomes.

The crown builds back up the tooth to its original shape and size and prevents it from breaking further. We make custom fit, lab fabricated, porcelain crowns that match your teeth in shade, shape, and size. We ensure that every crown we make and place fits perfectly and will last in your mouth for at least 5 years.

Frequently asked questions

How many appointments do I need for a dental crown?
Two appointments. The first appointment is to remove any decayed tooth/broken fillings, shape the tooth, and take a final impression of the tooth to send to the crown fabrication lab. The lab uses the impression to make the crown. The second appointment will be in 2 weeks to fit and cement the final crown.
What is a temporary crown?
During your first appointment, we remove the outer part of your tooth and shape your tooth so that it has space for the crown to go over it. After we are done shaping the tooth, we fabricate you a temporary crown that will cover the tooth. The temporary crown protects the tooth during the two weeks you are waiting for your crown. Because it is a temporary crown, you just have to be careful chewing on the side of the temporary and avoid any stick foods.
Does it hurt to get a tooth crown?
We make sure we give you local anesthesia before starting the procedure to get the tooth we will be working on, numb. This ensures that during the procedure, you will feel no pain. After the anesthesia has worn off, it is normal to feel some sensitivity after a few days. With every big cavity or tooth crack, there is always a chance that the sensitivity can turn into spontaneous pain, this could indicate that a root canal is indicated. Please call us immediately if this happens.

How many years does a crown last?
A crown is meant to last at least 5 years but if patients make the effort to take care of it and keep it clean, it can last much longer.

I just have a broken filling, why can't I just get a new filling?
The reason why the filling broke in the first place is because large fillings break down over time because they have less tooth structure to bond to and they shrink over time, causing open margins between the filling and the tooth. It is for this reason, that to fix teeth with large fillings, we have to put a crown that goes over the tooth. The crown lasts longer and is much stronger than a large filling.

Does a dental crown match my tooth?
Yes. We do our best to ensure your crown matches the shade and shape of your natural teeth. We take photos and use shade guides to ensure accuracy of the final product.

Do you still make gold crowns?
Yes, if requested. Gold is an excellent material but ME Dental primarily fabricates porcelain crowns because of their strength and visual appeal.
