Relieve jaw tension with Masseter Botox

Masseter Botox is a non-surgical treatment designed to relax the Masseter muscle, the large jaw muscle responsible for chewing. Overactive Masseter muscles can lead to teeth grinding (bruxism), TMJ discomfort, headaches, and even an overly square jawline. By strategically injecting Botox into this muscle, the tension is reduced, relieving pain and preventing further damage to your teeth while also softening the appearance of your jawline.
At ME Dental, we specialize in providing customized Masseter Botox treatments to address both functional and aesthetic concerns. Dr. Olivia Moran and our skilled team use advanced techniques to ensure precise and effective results. Whether you’re looking to alleviate discomfort, protect your teeth from grinding, or achieve a more refined facial contour, we take the time to understand your goals and craft a treatment plan tailored to your unique needs.
With ME Dental, you can trust that your care is in expert hands. Our approach prioritizes your comfort and well-being, using safe, minimally invasive methods to deliver exceptional results. From your initial consultation to follow-up care, we are committed to helping you achieve improved jaw function, relief from pain, and a more balanced, confident appearance. Let us guide you to lasting comfort and a renewed sense of confidence with Masseter Botox.

Who is a good candidate for masseter botox?

When patients have the symptoms listed below, the first step is to see what could be causing this. Many patients feel these symptoms due to a bad bite, teeth alignment, and/or heavy grinding and clenching. If this is the case, Dr. Moran always recommends to fix the underlying problem first that is causing these symptoms. This may be fixed with Veneers and/or Invisalign. However, if after all the initial treatments have been done the symptoms still arise or has not been fully fixed, then Dr. Moran will recommend therapeutic Botox to help alleviate these symptoms.

How does Botox work and help with the symptoms listed above?

Botox is a toxin that is injected in specific facial muscles to limit the mobility of those muscles. For patients experiencing heavy teeth grinding and clenching, jaw pain and/or frequent headaches, Dr. Moran will inject botox mainly into the masseter muscles (jaw muscles) and some in temporalis muscles (muscle on the side of the forehead). Botox will limit some movement in the masseter muscles. The jaw can still open and close; however, because of the botox, the patient will find it more difficult to clench or grind their teeth. Additionally, the decreased in use in the masseter muscles will loosen the muscle up and release tension in the jaw, neck and head.
If you are experiencing frequent jaw pain, headaches, tight jaw muscles, and/or limited jaw opening, Botox may alleviate these symptoms. , you may be an ideal candidate for Therapeutic Dental Botox injections administered by Dr. Olivia Moran, AAFE Botox certified.

Frequently asked questions

What is Botox and why is it used in dentistry?
Botox, or Botulinum Toxin, is a neurotoxic protein that temporarily relaxes muscles. In dentistry, it is used to treat conditions such as bruxism (teeth grinding), TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders, and for cosmetic enhancements like reducing the appearance of a square jaw.
What dental conditions can Botox treat?
Botox can be used to treat bruxism, TMJ disorders, facial pain, gummy smiles, and to improve the aesthetics of the jawline and lower face
How does Botox help with grinding or clenching my teeth?
Botox injections into the masseters (jaw muscles) reduce the muscle activity responsible for teeth grinding, providing relief from associated pain and preventing your teeth from wearing down and gums to recede.

What should I expect during my appointment when I get Botox?
Dr. Moran will clean the areas that she will inject first. She will then use very small needles to inject the botox into the masseters (jaw muscle) and your temporalis (side of the forehead muscle). The whole appointment will be no more than 20 minutes. Patients may experience minimal discomfort during the injections.

How long will the effects of Botox last?
Botox injections can last for three to five months. Some cases even longer. Every person has a different metabolism rate and thus some patients may metabolize the botox faster or slower than other patients.

How long does it take to see the results from Botox in the jaw?
You will start to see the positive effects of Botox within 3-7 days after the injections, with full effects visible in about 2 weeks. The results can last between 3 to 6 months.

Is there any restrictions I need to be aware of after getting Botox in my jaw?
Yes. For the first 24 hours, do the following:
  • Avoid scrubbing your face, especially near the areas where the botox was injected to.
  • Avoid scratching or playing with your face
  • Avoid as much sunlight exposure as possible
  • Avoid any high intensity activities that will cause you to sweat a lot.

How often do I need to get Botox treatment for my dental issues?
Botox treatments for dental issues usually need to be repeated every 3 to 6 months, depending on individual response and the severity of the condition. However, the more you do it, the less frequently you will need it over time. This is because it is training the muscles to move less.

How much Botox will I need?
Botox is measured in how much units a patient may need in a specific muscle. For example, patients with very large jaw muscles may need more units than those who have smaller jaw muscles. Additionally, patients who have a high metabolism or high tolerance from previous botox treatments, may need more units as well.
